THE PILLOWMAN

THE PILLOWMAN

by Martin McDonagh
directed by Kayla McLaughlin

ABOUT THE SHOW

Martin McDonagh’s macabre masterpiece, The Pillowman, tells the story of Katurian, a writer living in a totalitarian, who is interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a number of child murders happening in his town.

Why produce this piece? Shakespeare 70’s work at TCNJ aims to engage, challenge, and spark a conversation with and among its audience. We feel that the play asks critical questions about the power of storytelling, the responsibility of the artist, and the role we all play in the administration of free speech and expression. These questions and the conversations they generate—conversations about censorship, artistic freedom, and ultimately, what the stories we tell about our human condition say about us—make The Pillowman a challenging but worthy piece for the TCNJ audience.

The Pillowman ran October 19-23, 2023 at the Don Evans Black Box Theater in Ewing, NJ. The production was directed by ensemble and executive committee member Kayla McLaughlin.

Right at this moment, I don't care if they kill me. I don't care. But they're not going to kill my stories. They're not going to kill my stories. They're all I've got.
